Cadbury Recalls Chocolate Easter Eggs

LONDON (AP) -- Cadbury Trebor Bassett announced Saturday that it is recalling some of its chocolate Easter eggs in Britain and Ireland because they have the wrong nut allergy labeling.

The company said it would release advertisements on Sunday alerting customers to the recall.

People who have bought chocolate products on the recall list can claim a full refund, the company said.

Britain's Food Standards Agency said Cadbury Trebor Bassett, the British confectionary division of Cadbury Schweppes PLC, informed it about the recall on Friday night as required by law.

In June, Cadbury Trebor Bassett, which is based in Birmingham, withdrew seven confectionary products from the U.K.-Irish market after reporting salmonella contamination at a plant.

The Easter eggs are being recalled from store shelves because they are unsafe for people with nut allergies and have not been correctly labeled, the company said.

The products are still "perfectly safe" for those without allergies to nuts such as hazelnuts, and no other Cadbury products are affected, the company said in a statement.

It said the chocolate eggs "may contain traces of nuts. As a precaution, we advise nut allergy sufferers not to eat any of the Easter products until they either call the help line number or log on to the Web site for further information."

"We discovered this problem Friday but it was important for us to get this message out to allergy sufferers as soon as possible," Cadbury spokesman Tony Bilsborough said in a telephone interview. He said the company was contacting stores to give them the specific numbers of products that need to be recalled.

Bilsborough said thousands of chocolate Easter eggs would be recalled but couldn't give a more specific estimate. "A lot of products will be in store already, but because we are talking about Easter eggs, some won't be out there yet," he said.
